Item: 9 Description: M-2795 Fred M. Locke. Here’s an exceptionally nice half glass, half porcelain, Fred M. Locke “gutter top”. The top and bottom are original and held together with sulfur (yellow) cement. Initially used in Northern California, examples were subsequently shipped to (at least) Oregon and Hawaii. While we don’t know the provenance of this one, we can say it is one of the nicer examples we’ve seen in quite some time. Grade B-Plus: Tiny flake on the outside edge of crown; and a few surface nicks. On the underside of the umbrella, there are various flakes and nibbles to the delicate and fragile porcelain ring that made up the outside edge. There is flaking underneath the pour spout, but the spout itself isn’t damaged. View 4 shows the 6-2 Marking (Six Patent Dates). The 6-2 Marking was in service from August to December 1901, making this one of the earliest insulators with that marking. View 5 is the production date for when this specific insulator was made: August 3 1901. View 6 shows the embossing on the glass base: LOCKE’S PAT’S / DEC 15, 96 JUNE 7, 98. In View 6, the mark below the patent date is a dirty spot within a natural indention in the glass. The glass base is Grade A-Minus with some light annealing lines towards the threads.
