Item: 196  Description: Bottle: Embossed: F. Brown’s / Ess of / Jamaica Ginger / Philada.  Description: Pontil Marked. The Frederick Brown Company of Fifth & Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia operated from 1822 to 1919. This bottle was made circa 1850’s or 1860’s. Brown opened his drug & chemical company in 1822 and it was operated by three generations of the Brown family. Prohibition put the company out of business in 1919 because many of their products contained alcohol as a primary ingredient. Jamaica Ginger was a ginger extract that contained 80-percent alcohol. Upstanding citizens might not be comfortable buying a bottle of booze, but it was ok to buy ”medicine” like Jamaica Ginger. This flask-like bottle is 5.5 inches tall. View 3 shows the pontil mark on the base as well as a fracture on one side.
