Item: 11  Description: U-989 “Confederate Milk Bottle”. The Southern Porcelain Company of Kaolin, South Carolina made insulators for the Confederate Army until the factory burned down in 1864. This insulator was dug at the factory site. View 3 shows a circular punctate mark on one ear made by a skeleton key. The mark may have been an indicator of which worker at the factory made the insulator. Note in View 4 the slotted pin hole. The threadless pin would have had a raised “key” that fit in the slot to help hold the insulator in place.  Grade R = RESTORED. Our consignor says half the skirt has been restored as well as two of the tips on the wire groove (left end of View 3). Due to the shape and color, collectors refer to this style as a “milk bottle”.
